Napier Heritage Trails
Discover two of Napier’s most historically significant areas through these self-guided heritage trails. Each booklet contains a detailed route, historic photographs and information about the buildings, landmarks and stories encountered along the way.
The Ahuriri Walk explores one of Napier’s earliest areas of European settlement and the development of its historic port. Beginning beside the waterfront, the trail takes in Victorian cottages, former hotels and commercial buildings, the Iron Pot, the old Customhouse and the transformed Ahuriri waterfront. The walk is divided into two stages, allowing at least 40 minutes for Stage One and 60 minutes for Stage Two.
The Napier Hill Drive, with optional walks, explores the history, architecture, gardens and remarkable views of Mataruahou Napier Hill. The route passes historic homes dating from the 1860s, former schools and churches, Old Napier Prison, Bluff Hill Lookout and many of the hill’s distinctive streets and walkways. Allow approximately two to two and a half hours for the drive, excluding the optional walks.
Both trails can be enjoyed in your own time and are a free way to discover more of Napier’s history and heritage.
